"Extreme Makeover" Cosmetic Surgery

In this Age of Obesity, more and more people are opting for multiple cosmetic surgery procedures in one sitting.

These so-called "extreme makeovers," which take their name from recent TV shows about plastic surgery, provide a number of benefits to the patient. These include the fact that they are customized to each individua's health situation, total surgical time is shorter, fewer incisions are needed, the overall cost is lowered, and there is only a single recovery period instead of several. "Man Boob" Surgeries Increasing

Operations to correct oversize breasts, a condition that may afflict as many as 50 percent of British men, are increasing dramatically, according to some observers in Britain - and are likely seeing a big rise in America, as well.

The disorder, known medically as gynaecomastia and referred to colloquially as "man boobs," or "moobs," has no clear cause. But some experts believe it may result from imbalances in hormones such as the female hormone estrogen, which is also present in men. Gynaecomastia typically causes men to have very low self-confidence and self-esteem. They tend to restrict their social lives and dress in ways that disguise their chest area. (Read more)

Acne Scar Treatment

Acne is a rite of passage for most folks as they go through puberty. Approximately 90% of all adolescents and 25% of all adults experience acne. But in some, the problem can be particularly serious, and cause permanent scarring. "I was self conscious about it but no body ever really noticed it or would say anything, but it was something that I saw and I would have a problem with that I wanted to correct." Ariana Tauro is twenty years old now, no longer a teenager, no longer in high school, but the scars of the acne which started in her freshman year remain."It's more so visible when I'm not, tan and then the scarring I guess, really like a couple of years ago, maybe when I stopped going through puberty and it started scarring."

Better Face Lift

If you're in your 40's and say, you notice your face isn't as firm as it used to be; if some sagging and wrinkles are getting you down, there's now a less invasive type of facelift that's providing more benefit, especially where it affects those in mid-life. It's called an endoscopic forehead midface lift. Still not a lot of surgeons do this procedure, but new research shows it works great for getting to the middle portion of the face--around the cheeks--where the muscles start to loosen and the skin starts to drop in the 40's and 50's--and where botox just can't do the trick.

Buttock Agumentation

They’re some of the most envied backsides in Hollywood. J.LO, Beyonce…no doubt their curvaceous derrieres have set a trend ablaze. “I always wear fitted jeans,” says Marcella Bequillard. “Beef up the bottom area, beef up your butt a little, make it perky,” says Jill LaVorgna. Many women are now turning to buttock augmentation in an effort to compete with some of the best bottoms in Tinsel Town. “A butt lift is mostly a buttock enlargement or a buttock augmentation, but indirectly it causes some lifting of the buttocks, and basically it re-contours or reshapes the buttock,” says Dr. George Lefkovits of Lenox Hill Hospital.

Health Wrap: Studies on Botox, Migraines and Drinking

Researchers have discovered a novel way to increase the potency of Botox, which would translate into less frequent injections and perhaps even enhancing its cosmetic benefits, and it might mean lower prices for the popular wrinkle-remover. In a medical setting, small doses of the Botox toxin causes localized, temporary paralysis that erases wrinkles and unwanted muscle spasms. The researchers developed a synthetic molecule that can ‘super-activate’ the neurotoxin, thereby increasing the toxin’s paralyzing effect by as much as 14 times that of the untreated toxin.

That's according to a 10-year Johns Hopkins study published in the latest issue of the Journal of the National CancerIinstitute. It found the risk of noncurable prostate cancer, defined as a less than 75 percent chance of remaining disease-free 10 years after surgery, was the same for men receiving immediate surgical treatment and those who waited on average two years before having surgery.

Obesity Costs

There’s no question that the cost of obesity in America is not just a healthcare concern, but an economic concern as well. Bariatric surgery is one of the best options for people who are severely obese and cannot lose weight by traditional means or who suffer from serious obesity-related health problems. The surgery promotes weight loss by restricting food intake and, in some operations, interrupting the digestive process. As in other treatments for obesity, the best results are achieved with healthy eating behaviors and regular physical activity.

Kristin, mom of 4 month old, Carson, is thoroughly enjoying the little miracle she brought into the world, but as a first time mom she’s also trying to adjust to the person she now sees in the mirror. “I am really looking forward to get into a bathing suit and get into my old clothes, that is really the biggest thing,” says Kristin.

More than a third of the patients who participated in an eight-week kick-the-habit program that started before a scheduled surgery and continued after were able to stop smoking – and were still tobacco-free a year later, according to a recent report.

Revitalizing Aging Skin

Skin is the largest organ of the body and needs to be taken care of. Find out what happens to the skin as it ages in this two-minute video clip. In addition to genetics, the sun and stress take their toll on the skin. As the person ages the cells divide more slowly and the inner layer, the dermis, begins to thin. And the ability of the skin to repair itself decreases. It loses its elasticity too. Glycolic acid peel exfoliates the dead layer and increases blood supply to the skin. Patients can use laser treatment to remove brown spots from their skin.

Titan Skin Procedure

The Titan skin tightening procedure is giving thousands of people the world over the chance to non-surgically improve the way they look. As a former model, Erin Yates used to have a wash board stomach. But she says giving birth to four children changed all that. “I have gained a good 50 or 60 pounds with each of my children. Types of Chemical Peels and What Makes them Different

There are three main types of peels. Light peels are most commonly performed using alpha hydroxyacids. These are naturally occurring acids found in fruits and other foods. Alpha hydroxyacids have proven to be effective in treating dry skin, acne, liver or sun spots, diminishing fine facial wrinkles, decreasing pore size, and improving skin texture. Light peels are usually performed in a series of six to eight peels, each peel two or three weeks apart. This type of peel leaves the skin with a red glow that only lasts for a day or so.

Who are good candidates for a breast augmentation?

By inserting an implant behind each breast, surgeons are able to increase a woman's bust line by one or more bra cup sizes. If you're considering breast augmentation, this will give you a basic understanding of the procedure--when it can help, how it's performed, and what results you can expect. It can't answer all of your questions, since a lot depends on your individual circumstances. Please ask your surgeon if there is anything you don't understand about the procedure.

Breast augmentation can enhance your appearance and your self-confidence, but it won't necessarily change your looks to match your ideal, or cause other people to treat you differently. Before you decide to have surgery, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with your surgeon. The best candidates for breast augmentation are women who are looking for improvement, not perfection, in the way they look. If you're physically healthy and realistic in your expectations, you may be a good candidate.

Women Looking to Sculpt Ankles and Toes

Women in Britain are joining those in America in a race for cosmetic surgery on the lowest part of their lower extremities. Consequently, they are flocking to cosmetic surgeons for corrective work on "cankles," imperfect "toe cascades" and hammertoes.
